Designs and implements new hardware product development based upon design criteria of the project leader.  Functions both independently on smaller projects and as a project member in product development projects. Provides engineering support to manufacturing and other product support groups for existing products.  Recommends and implements improved methods for instrument design and product development.

      I.    Essential Duties and Functions

  1. Regularly designs, develops and implements hardware module requirements that meet system specifications for a project and is consistent with management objectives for quality, performance and reliability.  Regularly plans and develops portions of engineering design documentation.

  2. Regularly develops, designs and implements analog and digital circuits in support of project leader.  Supports or develops specific hardware/firmware/software interface projects, when approved.

  3. Regularly conducts tests on hardware/firmware/software performance, completes documentation on operation and performance results, and make recommendations in support of development options.

  4. Keeps management informed of current status of assigned projects and communicates regularly with management, project leaders and other support personnel. Maintains method of tracking time spent in support of products and projects.

  5. Regularly provides engineering support to manufacturing and product support groups for existing products.

  6. Frequently develops or identifies tools and methods that allow reutilization of designs and advises management on ways to improve productivity of engineering resources.

    II.    Scope

  1. Supervision – This position does not supervise others.

  2. Confidentiality - This position will have full access to all HW, FW and SW design documentation and SW source code for current and future products.  This individual also will have access to cost of goods, product development plans and limited budgetary information.

  3. Mental Application - This individual will follow existing policies and procedures, but will be responsible for advising management about product development methods and standards to improve efficiency.

  4. Physical Application - Any candidate capable of performing the principal duties and who meets any other job specifications is eligible for this position regardless of physical impairment or disability.

  5. Responsibilities - Product time to market will be a key responsibility of this individual.  As such, specific quantitative measures of performance and improvement will be used to measure individual productivity and efficiency.  Because this is an engineering role, errors in judgment can have significant consequences.

  6. Contacts / Internal and Public - Peers include HW, FW and SW design engineers, production engineers, and quality engineers.  Internal contact with product managers, sales managers, and customer service are necessary and useful.  Contacts to product support, field service representatives and manufacturing for support of current products and inputs for proposed product designs.  External contacts may include customers and OEM’s.

   III.    Conditions and Equipment

  1. Working Conditions - Work is performed at the Research & development facility in Oak Ridge, TN.  This is a salaried exempt position.  Some travel (5-15 days/yr.) may be required to visit customer sites and trade shows.

  2. Equipment Operation – Computer hardware/software using Altium Microsoft Windows XP operating system based tools such as Microsoft Office, SPICE, Xilinx and other HW design tools.  Job duties may also include working with ARM 7 based processors.

  IV.    Qualifications

  1. Education

Minimum Requirements:  BSEE degree and knowledge of development, test, and debug processes and methods in analog, digital and micro-controller-based electronics.
Preferred Requirements:  MSEE degree and knowledge of nuclear electronics or nuclear instrumentation is desirable.

  2. Experience

Minimum Requirements:  Three (3) or more years experience in design of analog and digital electronics in a team-based environment.
Preferred:  Five (5) or more years experience in design of analog, digital and microcontroller-based electronics, including low noise design, in a team-based environment.  Experience using Xilinx FPGA’s and/or Actel FPGA’s, VHDL and or Matlab is preferred.  Experience with Protel/Altium CAD for schematic capture and using PSpice for analog simulation would be a plus.

  3. Skills/Abilities

Required:  Demonstrated skills in product design of instrumentation using mixed analog and digital electronics.  Highly effective written and verbal communication skills and team oriented interpersonal skills to build working relationships in a team-based environment.
Preferred:  Same as required plus skills and abilities designing and working with photomultiplier tubes, high voltage circuits and low noise preamplifiers.
